OH&S Superintendent - BSO


BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) is Australia’s largest coal producer, with nine mine sites and a coal loading port in Central Queensland.

Based in our Brisbane office, the Project Development Group (PDG) is tasked with becoming a Centre of Excellence for the undertaking of studies and delivery of significant and sustaining capital projects within BMA. The Project Development Group provides project delivery services to BMA through the management of all phases of the investment life cycle.

Throughout our business, our commitment to Health, Safety, Environment and Community is unwavering.  The HSEC aspects of our projects are critical to our success.  Keeping pace with our growth opportunities and Zero Harm initiative, we are currently seeking an experienced OH&S Superintendent for the re-development of the Broadmeadow Mine surface infrastructure.  This presents an ideal opportunity to become involved with the first of BMA’s new generation of underground coal mines.

The OH&S Superintendent reports directly to the Project Manager and is a key member of the HSE team.

Your core accountabilities will include:

  • Assist in the delivery of health, safety, environment and community requirements for toll-gating through the Feasibility Study phase of the project.
  • Develop, implement and monitor the project’s Safety and Health Management System and documentation and the interface with the project contractors during the Execution Phase
  • Implement consistent and reliable processes which deliver operational goals, especially training & development.
  • FP key user/administrator for the site
  • Manage the Health and Safety risk register and incident investigations
  • Understanding HSE responsibilities and legal obligations.
  • Safety audits and compliance audits for contractors
  • Preparing and generating reporting
  • Ensure direct reports are provided with clear direction and work expectations

Skills and Experience

To be successful in this role you will have demonstrated experience in Occupational Health and Safety, along with expertise in mining or a heavy industry environment. Key to your success will be your strong working knowledge of Health & Safety legislation, as well as your experience with managing Health & Safety systems. 

Your technical strengths will be complemented by your excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with your ability to influence, motivate and maintain rapport with all levels of the workforce. This is a challenging role and will require an experienced person, preferably with tertiary qualifications in Safety or a related field and exposure to the project management environment.
